Each year, TIME highlights a curated selection of remarkable destinations offering new and compelling experiences for travelers. To compile the prestigious list, TIME solicited nominations of places, including hotels, from its international network of correspondents and contributors.

Accommodation at the lodge and its villas blends privacy with design-driven luxury. The exclusive-use four-bedroom Homestead offers a fully staffed retreat with a private chef and activity guides, while seven newly built villas feature floor-to-ceiling windows, fireplaces and expansive terraces with direct mountain views.

Dining is centered at Sugarloaf restaurant, where chef Taylor Cullen leads a seasonal tasting menu program highlighting ingredients grown in the lodge's own gardens. The open kitchen format allows guests to watch dishes take shape as Cullen showcases local produce including horopito, radish and sunflower, reflecting the landscape and seasons of the Canterbury high country.

Experiences at Flockhill connect visitors directly with the land. Guests can join local shepherds and dogs to herd sheep across the station, bottle-feed lambs in spring, or explore the surrounding wilderness through fly fishing, horseback riding, rock climbing, biking, rafting and ATV excursions. On property, whisky tastings, lawn games and billiards offer quieter ways to unwind.
