In celebration of the spring equinox, Kyoto's traditional industries will be showcased, with the Kyoto Museum of Craft and Design offering free admission on March 20, 2025. Normally, the museum charges a 500 yen entrance fee, but on this day, visitors can explore exhibits of traditional crafts, including Nishijin weaving, Kyo-yuzen, Kyo-yaki, and Kiyomizu-yaki.
The museum highlights 74 types of traditional crafts from Kyoto, including fabric-dyeing, pottery, and lacquerware. Visitors can learn about the techniques and history behind these crafts through detailed explanations, videos of the manufacturing process, and interactive displays involving sounds, smells, and textures.
The museum will also feature a special exhibition, “KYOTO CRAFTS and DESIGN COMPETITION 2024-2025,” showcasing selected works from both professional artisans and students, running until March 23, 2025.
Visitors can also enjoy live demonstrations of Kyo-yaki and Kiyomizu-yaki pottery-making, offering a close-up view of traditional craftsmanship.
