Undercastle Cottage

It's a luxury, dog-friendly cottage set deep in the woods with only woodland wildlife and the National Park's famous free-roaming ponies as your neighbours.

The location is perfect for Valentine's; it's a place to relax, unwind, and natter as swans, ducks, kingfishers, and wild otters play in the river at the bottom of the garden. The river is The Hampshire Avon, often hailed as the best fly-fishing river in the UK, and guests can enjoy 2,500m of private fishing. Fans of the TV programme Gone Fishing may also recognise Undercastle Cottage, which featured in series one when Bob Mortimer and Paul Whitehouse stayed here.

Inside is packed with romance, personality and opulence by the bucket load: There's a large log burner, vaulted ceilings, and underfloor heating, and it's furnished with beautiful antiques, squishy sofas and the most comfortable beds topped with handmade mattresses that you'll ever sleep on. There's a great foodie pub up the lane and award-winning restaurants close by. Or, book the fridge to be filled with bubbles and home-cooked meals to pop in the oven when you're ready for easy, relaxing suppers.

The cottage is super cosy and perfect just for two - but it can sleep up to six. There are two bedrooms (a King upstairs and a double on the ground floor), with an additional ensuite twin in the Fishing Lodge, a few steps across the sun terrace – great for friends, Grandparents or teens wanting privacy.

Step outside the front door for forest walks or hop on a bike to explore over a hundred miles of cycle paths. If you want to get active, there are first-class golf courses, a shooting range, horse riding, Canadian canoe tours (you won't need to get wet!), and even a dry ski slope close by. And, if you fancy a change of scene, Christchurch Harbour and Highcliffe's dune-fringed beaches for a winter wander are just a half-hour drive south.

Undercastle Cottage is the only 5 star Gold Award Visit England holiday cottage in the New Forest National Park. It takes full advantage of its magical surroundings, deep in the woods on the banks of the famous fishing river – The Hampshire Avon.

The cottage is furnished with antiques and unique pieces of beautiful furniture which stand on heated stone floors and solid wood floorboards adorned with artisan rugs under vaulted ceilings. As an alternative from the front door, you can enter the property through a utility room with a washing machine, tumble dryer and large Neff fridge with wine storage and freezer, past a downstairs loo and into a hand-painted fitted kitchen and dining room where guests will find a welcome hamper on arrival full of local goodies, including freshly baked bread, homemade butter, free-range eggs and bacon, cheese, biscuits, cakes, chocolate and freshly squeezed apple juice, local cider and beer.

The living room has a large inglenook fireplace and log burner, a TV (with a dongle for Wi-Fi and TV channels), a DVD player and board games and two big comfy sofas on hand to soak up the gorgeous views through the French doors. The main house features one king-size bedroom upstairs and one double bedroom on the ground floor. Additionally, an ensuite twin bedroom with a TV and hospitality tray is a few steps across the sun terrace in the separate Fishing Lodge, which also has another terrace overlooking the river – perfect for elderly parents or teens wanting their own space. Note the Fishing Lodge cannot be rented separately.

The well-kept ¾ acre garden features three pretty spring-fed ponds, a tree swing and a hammock to take in the river views. The large wrap-around sun terrace is home to a BBQ and plenty of garden furniture to while away the days, watch swans glide by, and wild otters play in the river.
Fishing: Set on the banks of the crystal clear chalk stream waters of the Hampshire Avon River, guests have 2500m of private fishing. The river is considered the best fly fishing river in the country, famed for its large Barbel, Chub, Pike, Salmon, and Trout. Fishing tutorage can be arranged for guests at an additional charge, whether they are novices wanting to learn how to fish or experienced anglers wishing to perfect their technique.
Forest walks and cycle paths run from the front door, with golf, horse riding, good-eating pubs, and restaurants nearby. Two dog-friendly pubs are within easy walking distance. Winter attractions in the area include the New Forest Wildlife Park, Snowtrax dry ski slope, Beaulieu National Motor Museum, Monkey World, Corfe Castle, Hurst Castle and The Sammy Miller Motorcycle Museum. The cathedral city of Salisbury to see the Magna Carta and retail therapy in the city's swish boutiques is just six miles away, and Stonehenge is a few minutes more.
