Kyoto City Tourism Association

Kyoto City, renowned for its rich history, culture, and traditions, is continuously evolving to offer sustainable, high-quality travel experiences that respect both its heritage and the environment. In collaboration with the Kyoto City Tourism Association (DMO Kyoto), the city is committed to addressing the challenges of overtourism while fostering innovation in the tourism sector.

In 2022, Kyoto City launched the Inbound Innovation Kyoto initiative to support businesses in developing and commercialising new, sustainable travel products and experiences aimed at the inbound tourism market. This initiative is particularly focused on creating opportunities for intellectually curious visitors interested in learning more about Kyoto's unique history, culture, and traditions. By fostering partnerships with local businesses, Kyoto City is empowering entrepreneurs and long-standing family-run enterprises to contribute to a more sustainable and enriching tourism model. A selection of inspiring companies are recognised as Inbound Innovators for their pioneering efforts in this space. These businesses, which range from long-established family enterprises to startups, are redefining the visitor experience in Kyoto.

Here are some of the innovative companies leading the way:

  1. Nishizawa Stay
Founded by young entrepreneur Tetsuo Nishizawa, Nishizawa Stay is transforming travel into meaningful, personal encounters. By focusing on the people and culture of Kyoto, rather than just the sights, the company offers immersive experiences such as the “1/KYOTO” tours. These tours encourage visitors to explore the city through the eyes of locals and create lasting connections. Their properties include the Kyomachiya-Suite Rikyu (a traditional townhouse rental) and Sights Kyoto, a multifaceted tourist facility offering a co-working space and pub. Nishizawa's vision for “Hood Travel” aims to shift tourism from conventional sightseeing to a deeper, more human-centered exploration of Kyoto. Learn more about Nishizawa Stay
  2. Discover Noh in Kyoto
Julia Yaname, founder of Discover Noh in Kyoto, brings a unique and profound experience to visitors by providing access to the ancient Japanese performing art of Noh. As a practitioner of Kanze School Noh since 1999, Julia offers guided tours, performance experiences, and events to help visitors better appreciate this centuries-old art form. Her role as a “noh concierge” ensures that tourists can enjoy Noh with deep understanding and connection, fostering an appreciation for Kyoto's intangible cultural heritage. 3. Kyoto Meditation Center - Stress Management Through Zen
The Kyoto Meditation Center offers a unique opportunity for visitors to experience Zen meditation, or zazen, as a method for stress management and personal growth. CEO and instructor Daisetz Sasaki, who is fluent in English and has experience abroad, has made Zen practices more accessible to international visitors. By partnering with authentic Zen temples in Kyoto, the centre provides tailored SanZen programs, designed to help visitors embrace mindfulness and find calm through the teachings of Zen. These innovators are part of a broader effort to develop a sustainable tourism model in Kyoto—one that emphasizes quality experiences, encourages deeper connections with local culture, and reduces the strain on well-trodden tourist paths. By promoting these kinds of experiences, Kyoto City is supporting the growth of businesses that are both culturally enriching and environmentally responsible.

Kyoto City's continued commitment to improving the quality of its tourism experience ensures that visitors can discover new facets of the city while protecting the traditions and communities that make Kyoto a truly unique destination. The collaboration between the city, local entrepreneurs, and visitors is a vital step in shaping the future of sustainable tourism in Kyoto.
